Furlongs - Definitions
A furlong is one eighth of a mile which is 220 yards.
The furlong is derived from the anglo-saxon terms for furrow and long. A furrow being a length of earth turned by a plough. Furrows tended to be long as the team pulling the plough had to be unhitched and the plough turned around at the end of each furrow. The furlong however tended to have a different length dependent on the type of soil in an area, this led to confusion and to prevent this the furlong was standardised around 1300AD in England at a length of one eighth of a mile.
Today you are most likely to see the furlong used as a measure of length in horse racing, with the English Derby being 1 mile 4 furlongs and some sprint races such as the King George Stakes being run over 5 furlongs.
