Rods, Poles & Perches - Definitions
Probably the most confusing of the imperial length measures, the Rod, Pole or Perch are all names for a measure of 5½ yards (or ¼ of a chain - though the chain is a much later unit of measure). Why 5½ yards? If anyone can help with this please send infomation via our Help Us Improve page.
Why 3 different names for the same measure? - this is because each name comes from a different era. The oldest name is the perch, which goes back to at least the 13th century where it is mentioned in a manuscript known as The Composition of Yards and Perches also known as The Statute of Ells and Perches.
Somewhere between 1300 and 1593 the name used in English law had changed from perch to pole as the definition of the statute mile from the time of Elizabeth I states that a mile contains 8 furlongs and every furlong 40 poles.
It is unknown where the name rod comes from but it is likely that it derived from early surveyors using a rod of 5½ yards for measuring land but sometime after 1593 this became the most common name for this measure of length. (It is likely that the name pole also came from measuring sticks of 1 perch in length and that the use of pole and rod as names just became more common than the use of perch).
