Inch - Definitions
Since 1st July 1959 the inch has been defined as 25.4 millimeters (derived from a redefintion of the yard as exactly 0.9144 meters).
Previously the inch had been defined by a standard measure kept in the Exchequer chamber in the Guildhall London.
Earlier definitions from the time of Edward II, and possibly earlier, in England defined the inch at 3 barleycorns, the barleycorn being 1/3 of an inch and the basis of the UK shoe size system originally defined by Edward II.
From the time of David I (reigned 1124-1153) Scottish inch was defined as the width of an average man's thumb at the base of the nail, this would be smaller than an English inch. Other definitions of the Scottish inch actually put it as slightly larger than an English inch. Scottish length definitions were legally abolished in 1685 and dropped out of general use by the end of the 18th century.
