Yards - Definitions
Since 1st July 1959 the yard as exactly 0.9144 meters.
It is difficult to put a definitive origin to the yard but from the late 13th century the yard was in common usage and defined as 3 feet.
From the 15th century onwards standard yards were made or various metals to define the length of a yard, these of course would vary slightly in length depending on the temperature.
In the early 19th century attempts were made to redefine the yard in terms of other physical phenomena, however this was abandoned and an Imperial yard was made of brass, with the standard including the yard being at a temperature of 62°F. Following this further standard yards were created during the 19th century, with some being distributed to the US and Commonwealth countries that used imperial measurements.
Due to the standard yard shrinking slightly, of the order of 1 part per per million every 20 years, in 1895 measurements were made which determined the length of a metre at 39.370113 inches and this was then used to redefine the yard as 36/39.370113 meters.
