Miles - Definitions
The imperial mile is defined as being 1,760 yards having been so since the reign of Elizabeth I when an act of parliament stated that the a mile shall contain eight furlongs, each furlong forty poles and each pole sixteen and a half feet.
This definition of the mile replaced earlier definitions which were slightly longer than the Elizabethan statute mile. Scotland and Ireland had seperate definitions of the mile. In Scotland the mile was 1,976 yards and was formerly abolished in 1685 but continued to be used as late as the 18th century. In Ireland the mile was even longer, being 2,240 yards and although it was abolished in 1824 following the union with Britain, it continued in use until the mid 19th century. Some attempts to reinstate the Irish mile were made following independence of the Republic of Ireland.
There were many different European miles, of varying length, used historically and most were superseded by the metric system. In Scandinavia the mile unit still exists and is defined as 10km, having been standardised following metrification in Sweden and Norway.
